For Veterans - By Veterans

The Spartans Veterans Rugby Club, "The Spartans", aims to unites serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force and proudly welcomes our allied brothers and sisters through the game of rugby. Built on the values of courage, respect, integrity, and teamwork, the Spartans provide a strong, inclusive community where veterans can stay connected, rediscover purpose, and support one another beyond service life. Our mission is to use rugby as a vehicle for wellbeing, inclusion, and camaraderie—promoting both physical and mental health while fostering pride, mateship, and belonging within the veteran community. More than just a rugby team, the Spartans stand as a symbol of strength, resilience, and the enduring spirit of those who serve or have served. As a registered charity, we strive to deliver support not only on the field, but beyond rugby, through dedicated initiatives and a growing support network for veterans adjusting to life after the military

Why join the Spartans?

Joining the Spartans Rugby Club is about far more than just playing rugby — it’s about belonging to something bigger than yourself.

You become part of a tight-knit community built on service values, discipline, resilience and camaraderie. For veterans and serving members, the club provides a familiar environment where teamwork, leadership and shared experience are understood without explanation. That sense of connection can be powerful — particularly for those transitioning out of Defence who are looking for purpose, structure and mateship again

On a practical level, you will be able to gain access to quality coaching, nationally aligned qualifications (for players, coaches and referees), structured training, competitive fixtures, and pathways that link into Rugby Australia frameworks. You’ll improve your fitness, sharpen your leadership skills, and continue developing both physically and professionally

Off the field, you join a network of supporters, families and partners who actively champion veteran wellbeing. The Spartans provide opportunities to contribute, mentor, support charity initiatives, and remain connected to a values-driven team environment.

Quite simply — you get mateship, purpose, development, pride, and the chance to wear the green and gold representing something that stands for service, standards and community

A proud and historic legacy lives on

The Spartan's was born from the proud legacy of the Royal Australian Signals (RASIGS) Rugby Club and the RASIGS Spartans representative side — a team built on service, strength, and camaraderie. Following years of success on and off the field, many of the RASIGS veteran and serving players recognised the positive impact rugby had on their own wellbeing, teamwork, and sense of belonging it provided them. For many though, a greater challenge was now sort, away from defence and the challenges it brings

From a shared vision, the decision was made to expand beyond a Corps Rugby team and create a club that welcomes all Australian Defence Force members and veterans, along with our allied friends, regardless of service or background. Through rugby, the Spartans aim to provide a supportive environment where veterans and serving members can rediscover the spirit of mateship, maintain their physical and mental health, and find purpose and connection within a likeminded community, staying connected to a past some had long forgotten

Our proud individual military service recognised

Did you know, by playing in the Spartans, we are unique in that we do not all wear the same socks — and that’s deliberate. Each player wears socks that represent who they were, or still are, within their service

Be it Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines. If you were Infantry, a Signaler, an Engineer, an airman or even a submariner, we each had an identity. Whatever shaped us during our time in uniform, we step onto the field, we bring that history with us

The different socks symbolise our individual journeys, our regimental pride, and the paths we walked before coming together under one jersey. We honour our past while playing as one team. Different socks, different history, but one club. One standard

The iconic Spartans logo

The Spartans logo represents the warrior spirit that defines our club — resilience, courage, discipline, and the commitment to stand firm until the final whistle. Inspired by the legacy of the Spartan warrior, it symbolises defending your ground, protecting your teammates, and never stepping back when challenged

The green and gold Indigenous pattern woven into the design reflects modern Australia — a nation built on shared history, service, and identity — while honouring its First Nations heritage. The Indigenous artwork elements represent family, one power, togetherness, and strength in unity. It is a reminder that while we come from different backgrounds, trades, units, and services, we stand as one team — united in purpose, proud of our past, and strong together on and off the field
